Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the Wireshark Packet Analyzer & Manager service. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency in our data handling practices.

2. Data Controller & Data Protection Officer

Data Controller:

This service is operated by a private individual for educational and security analysis purposes only. The operator acts as the data controller and data protection officer for this service.

Contact Information:

For privacy-related inquiries, please refer to the contact information provided in ourImprint.

3. Data Collection & Processing

3.1 Uploaded Packet Files

Critical: All uploaded packet capture files (.pcap, .pcapng) are processed using a secure, ephemeral storage architecture.

  • Files are directly uploaded to Cloudflare R2 storage using presigned URLs
  • Files are never received by Vercel servers - they bypass the 45MB function payload limit
  • Files are streamed from R2 for analysis - never fully loaded into memory
  • Files are automatically deleted from R2 immediately after analysis completion
  • Files are never written to disk on any server
  • Files are never permanently stored - only analysis results are kept
  • No packet data persists beyond the active analysis session

Storage Architecture: Files are temporarily stored in Cloudflare R2 during processing, then automatically deleted. This allows us to handle large files (up to 1.5GB) efficiently while maintaining strict data privacy.

3.2 Technical Data

We collect the following technical data for service operation:

  • IP Address: Used for anti-abuse protection and rate limiting
  • Session Cookies: Used for session management and user identification
  • Upload Timestamps: Used for rate limiting (stored temporarily in memory)
  • File Metadata: File name, size, and type (only during processing)

3.3 What We Do NOT Collect

  • Personal identification information (name, email, address)
  • Browsing history or website usage patterns
  • Location data beyond IP geolocation
  • Any data beyond what is necessary for service operation

4. Data Storage & Retention

4.1 Packet Files

Ephemeral R2 Storage: Packet files are temporarily stored in Cloudflare R2 during processing. Files are automatically deleted from R2 immediately after analysis completion, typically within seconds. Files are never written to disk on any server and are never permanently stored.

Storage Duration: Files typically exist in S3 for less than 5 minutes (processing time). Failed uploads are automatically cleaned up after 24 hours.

4.2 Rate Limiting Data

Rate limiting data (IP addresses, upload timestamps) is stored temporarily in server memory for anti-abuse protection. This data is automatically cleaned up and does not persist beyond server restarts or cleanup cycles (every 5 minutes).

4.3 Cookies

Session cookies are stored in your browser's local storage. You can delete these at any time through your browser settings. Cookie consent is stored locally in your browser.

5. Purpose of Data Processing

We process data exclusively for the following purposes:

  • Packet Analysis: Processing uploaded files to extract network traffic information
  • Anti-Abuse Protection: Preventing server overload through rate limiting
  • Service Operation: Ensuring the service functions correctly
  • Security: Protecting the service from malicious use

We do NOT: Sell data, share data with third parties, use data for advertising, or use data for any purpose beyond service operation.

6. Legal Basis for Processing

Data processing is based on:

  • Consent: By using this service, you consent to the processing of data as described in this policy
  • Legitimate Interest: Processing is necessary for service operation and security
  • Contractual Necessity: Processing is required to provide the requested service

7. Your Rights

Under applicable data protection laws, you have the following rights:

  • Right to Access: You can request information about what data we process about you
  • Right to Rectification: You can request correction of inaccurate data
  • Right to Erasure: You can request deletion of your data (note: packet files are already ephemeral)
  • Right to Object: You can object to processing of your data
  • Right to Data Portability: You can request your data in a portable format
  • Right to Withdraw Consent: You can withdraw consent at any time

To exercise these rights, please contact us using the information provided in ourImprint.

8. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data:

  • All data processing occurs in secure server environments
  • Packet files are never written to disk, reducing attack surface
  • Automatic memory cleanup prevents data retention
  • Rate limiting protects against abuse and overload
  • HTTPS encryption for all data transmission

9. Third-Party Services

This service uses the following third-party services for IP intelligence:

  • Team Cymru ASN Lookup: DNS-based ASN queries (no data shared)
  • Google DNS: DNS over HTTPS queries (no data shared)
  • Cloud Provider APIs: Public IP range lists (read-only, no authentication)

No personal data is shared with these services.Only public IP addresses are queried for network intelligence purposes.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
